It was kind of surprising seeing as Silverio missed the entire 2012 season due to a nasty car accident that ultimately led to Tommy John surgery for the toolsy outfielder.
Silverio, 25, was removed from the 40-man roster before re-signing to a minor-league deal with the Dodgers.
His 2011 season got people talking and believing, so much so that Baseball America ranked him as the Dodgers' fourth-best prospect heading into 2011. I had him at No. 12 and had him slotted in the mid-20s for my upcoming Top 50 prospects.
Silverio has to remain on the Marlins' roster all season, otherwise they have to send him back to the Dodgers. By selecting him, the Marlins pay the Dodgers $50,000. I know it sounds weird, but the Marlins are actually paying a baseball player to play ball. Novel concept.
Not sure Silverio will last the season on the 25-man roster, but it'll be interesting to follow his progression in 2012.

Speaking of your top 50, when is that scheduled to be released?
ReplyDeleteHoping by the end of the month, but definitely before BA releases its Top 10 (Jan. 25). Having trouble ranking guys who are in the 20-50 range because they're so interchangeable.
ReplyDeleteUgh...Losing Silverio is a big hit imo. The Dodgers definitely made a mistake here, especially b/c the Marlins are so desperate for talent that they have a good chance of keeping him.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure many will disagree, but a best case scenario I see for Silverio is along the lines of 2012 Alex Rios, who put up a slash line of .304/.334/.516. Silverio seems to have the potential for a high average (high contact rate) low OBP many XBH's profile. Rios this year graded out as fringy in CF and average in RF, exactly what I could see Silverio recreating. All added up, Rios produced 4.0 fWAR this year, and the Marlins potentially get 6+ cost-controlled years of a possible replica. Now many will argue that Silverio isn't that good, but this seems to be a blunder for LA.
Not sure it's going to be a blunder, but Silverio definitely has some talent. Rios isn't a bad comp, but Rios was a much more highly regarded prospect than Silverio.

A.J. Thanks for the comp and I too was a big Silverio fan. He just got caught in a OF jam at our minor lg. levels Puig, Joc, Van Slyke etc...I will ollow him on my MILB player bookmarks and I'm glad he went to te AL...
