Ramona Shelburne of ESPN LA reported the Dodgers signed best pitcher in the galaxy Clayton Kershaw to a 7-year, $215 million contract. That works out to $30.7 million per season.
The total number and average annual value are the highest for a pitcher in MLB history. The AAV is the highest of any player in the game's history.
Shelburne reported there is an out clause in the contract after five years, which means Kershaw could be a free agent again going into his age-31 season. If he doesn't exercise it, he'd still be 33 years old the next time he's free agent-eligible.
This is the quick and dirty write-up of Kershaw's deal. I'll have a more in-depth post later and/or when more details become available.
That collective gust of wind was every concerns Dodger fan exhaling after the contract extension was reported. Breathe easy, Dodger fans.
Next up: Masahiro Tanaka.
Great move by the Dodgers. Kershaw will be a beast in the next few years.
