2013 MLB Draft prospect profile: Nick Ciuffo, Lexington HS (S.C.)

The fourth 2013 MLB Draft prospect I’m profiling is Nick Ciuffo. He’s a catcher and, despite the poor history of first-round high school catchers, is an intriguing prospect.

Ciuffo (pronounced “Choo-fo”) has drawn comparisons to A.J. Pierzynski. He’s not as tall as Pierzynski, bu this left-handed swing and catching skills make it an apt comparison.

At the plate, Ciuffo profiles as an above-average offensive catcher with some power potential. The biggest knock against his offense is his tendency to get too pull-happy – not uncommon for high schooler hitters. That can be corrected with instruction. He has a quick swing that should lead to success in the majors.

Ciuffo’s framing behind the plate is a plus for him. He’s an energetic catcher who should develop into a team leader. His throwing needs some refinement, as he has more of a wind-up instead of a really quick release. Perfect Game has him at 1.83 seconds on pop time, which is above-average, despite his wind-up. Ciuffo’s arm is strong enough, but it won’t be mistaken for Yadier Molina or Ivan Rodriguez’s anytime soon. He is easily the best receiver in the class.

He’s committed to the University of South Carolina, but he’ll be an easy sign as a surefire first-round draft pick. There’s little doubt he’ll be available at the Dodgers’ selection. He’s in my Top 10, but he’s not my first option for the Dodgers at No. 18.
